ST1-12MW identifies ways that everyday materials can be physically changed and combined for a particular purpose
ST1-13MW relates the properties of common materials to their use for particular purpose
explore how some everyday materials can be physically changed by actions, eg bending, twisting, stretching, squashing or heating
1KB is learning about different materials and how they can be combined, including by mixing, for a particular purpose. They are creating tables in their science journals to record their observations. Students made playdough and observed how heat can change the combined materials. The class is also using MinecraftEdu as part of their learning and are highly engaged in their activities. For the past three lessons children needed to identify what objects they needed to have and then what materials they needed to locate in their environment (virtual) in order to make the objects. They needed cobblestone to make a furnace so that they could heat their iron ore and create iron ingots. The iron ingots were then crafted into an iron bucket as they will need three of these to hold milk in order to make a cake in the next lesson. Properties were examined such as iron, it is strong and won’t break. Wood is strong but still easy to shape. Students were mindful to replant tree saplings after cutting down the fully grown trees for timber. Sustainability is very important, even in Minecraft! Each object has a specific purpose and is made from specific materials to suit their purpose.
