To compliment 2KB’s English text, Vanilla Ice Cream by Bob Graham, students created their own Indian ceremonial elephants. This was a guided drawing activity where students focused on profile point of view. The instructions can be found here: Watercolour for Elephants Tutorial. 2KB viewed images of painted Indian elephants to gain a perspective of the size of the elephants and how large their painted decorations needed to be. The children each used two brush sizes and acrylic paint was mixed to form grey paint for the elephant and then students chose a bright colour for the background that reflected the festival colours used on the elephants. Oil pastels and black fine tipped felt pens were also used. 2KB learnt that Indian elephants have smaller ears and tusks than African elephants and that sometimes plastic extensions are screwed onto the tusks so that banners and adornments can be hung from them.
