On Wednesday 3/4KB had a special parent visitor come and talk to them about her Samoan Malu. Lei is the daughter of a chief and therefore was able to have this extremely intricate design tattooed on her legs. The whole process was done by hand and took over eight hours! Lei provided the two photos below and gave us permission to publish them on our class blog.
We used Google Earth to find Samoa and Lei’s village and the children asked many questions. Two students even remembered they had seen a travel advertisement for Samoa in an Australian Geographic and found it to show us all. Afterwards, the children were given permission to study the designs more closely. They were able to see the diamond shapes that represented Lei’s parents located behind the knee. They also saw the symbols representing other family members, houses and significant elements of Samoan culture.
